Mission Statement

The mission of the Acton Cemetery Committee is to protect, preserve and promote all Acton cemeteries in accordance with good-faith practices and current Maine statutes. Our duties include inventorying and mapping all cemeteries, and provide methods for current repairs as well as ongoing maintenance. We will provide placement of flags on veterans’ graves and apply for veteran headstones from the Veterans Administration when necessary. We will strive to accomplish this mission while being fiscally responsible to the community that has charged us with this task.

Meeting Minutes

Fiscal Year 22 Report October 2022

Recent Cleanup

October 13 was cold and wet but 6 volunteers from the cemetery committee and Acton-Shapleigh Historical Society worked for 5 hours at the Simeon Brackett cemetery on Milton Mills Road. The crew cut and cleared brush, raked out leaves, filled in a burrow and uprighted Simeon Brackett's headstone. The before and after photos below speak for themselves.

On June 16, 2018, five volunteers spent three hours at the Dame cemetery on Rt 109 raking, mowing, lopping and stump pulling. The photo at left was taken on June 8, before work was done, and on the right was taken on June 16.

Kittery Museum Creates Gravesite Database

The Kittery Historical and Naval Museum digitally logged about 5900 burials in nearly 140 cemeteries in its town. Museum visitors can now search for family members or do research on this database which also shows maps of where the deceased is buried. For more information see this recent seacoastonline story or visit their website at  www.kitterymuseum.com.
